Class Reflection

Looking back on my write up about Personal Cyber infrastructure,  I feel that my grasp of the concept is about the same. I also feel the same way about the “Bag of Gold” analogy as well as the concept of a “digital facelift”. However, I now have more personal experience managing myself and my presence on the internet and I am able to understand the concepts a bit more clearly than I could at the beginning of the semester.

My idea of “storytelling” has changed pretty drastically, however. Before this class, I assumed that a story could be told well through words through mediums such as books, magazines, newspapers, etc. However, I no longer feel this way. Because of this class, I have been unable to grasp the concept that just about everything can be a story, which we did in class. We started off with pictures (visual assignments). This one was slightly obvious as everyone knows the adage of “A picture is worth a thousand words”. A well taken photograph can speak more effectively than a 3 page paper.  However, we also learned how to make our own stories with pictures through assignments involving Photoshop and GIMP. The Fat Cat assignment is an example of this. We also learned how to tell stories through mediums such as audio and video. We learned how to take clips and edit them in a way to give the listener a new impression.

I would say that the most valuable things I am taking away from this class would be my experience with Photoshop, Audacity, GIMP, Windows Live Movie Maker, as well as other programs. When I first chose to take this class, it was more of an outlet for me to be creative. However, as time passed, I realized that this class was not only fun for my creative side, but that  I was actually learning skills that relate to my Business major. I say this because I recently discovered a subset of careers in business that relate to this course – Social Media Strategist – which required specific knowledge of all programs we used in this course.

We did a ton of work this semester. This being the case, I have a lot  to choose from when asked “Which ones are your favorite?”. I found it to be a pretty easy question to answer, as a few of my works immediately popped into my head.

  1. DNA and Evolution Minimalist Poster. I had a lot fun with this assignment and I am very please with how it came out. It gave me the chance to gain some more experience with GIMP as well as stretch my design muscles. I wanted to make the movie title interesting and now simply splat it above the image, but I also didn’t want to shrink it into the side of the plant. I was glad I came up with the idea of incorporating one of the letters into the image.
  2. Spying on People. This was my very first completed assignment, which is why I think its funny that it turned out to be one of my favorites. This assignment gave me an excuse to run around campus like a creeper and take pictures of random things. I was finally one of those people. I was also very happy to learn how to do this assignment using Picnik, as I had never done any photo editing before. The response from the completed assignment didn’t hurt my ego either.
  3. Colorize Your World. This may seem like a silly assignment to think of as one of my favorites, but it is. I like how I was able to take 3 images of Johnny Bravo in different positions and make it look kind of natural. I also start to think of my past every time I look at it, which makes me smile. I think that’s why I like it so much.
  4. The New Games Trailer Mashup . I liked working with this assignment. Even though the voices dont completely match up with the video, I think I was able to work around it. It gave me experience with working with audio levels and segments to make things more fluid.
  5. Created assignment – Draw it. This assignment actually came out of what I learned doing the DaVinci Invents the Ham Sandwhich assignment. Being a drawer, I love this affect.

If a future DS106er asked me my opinion about this class, it would get raving reviews. I would make sure to let them know that even though its “100 level course” it has the time requirement of an upper level. I would consider that a good thing though. You will learn how to create and manage your own blog,  valuable skills with Audacity, Photoshop, GIMP, and many other programs while having a fun time. My only recommendations to them would be to make sure to set time apart for this course as well as pick good group members for the Radio Show project.

If I were in charge of this class, I would only change a couple things. First, I found the amount of star assignments for the audio and video assignments to be rather difficult to finish. I like the idea of having the star assignments, so I would probably only decrease them a little for those sections. I would also try to give a little more time to prepare for the Radio Show assignment. It wasn’t that time intensive really, but the timing in which the assignment was given made it hard due to Spring Break and everyone leaving the weekend before its due date.

Final Project Summary

For my final project, I decided that I wanted to take the professors advice and incorporate something that I am interested in since I would be working on it for an extended  period of time. After some soul searching, I came up with the idea of incorporating one of my favorite shows – The Walking Dead. For anyone who hasnt seen the show, it is about a group of people and their stories in regards to surviving a zombie apocalypse. Rick grimes, a former police officer who is also one of the survivors, gets thrown into a leadership role. He is in charge of keeping them alive. Ricks family and best friend, Shane, are also in the group. As time goes on, Shane begins to question Ricks decision making, becomes hostile and attempts to lead the group. After realizing this, I decided that it would be a good idea to make an election campaign between Rick Grimes and Shane Walsh, with a pro-Rick attitude. To make this a reality, I had to do several things.

First, I had to make a campaign site. I did this by creating a new subdomain from my original blog. I named the subdomain “voterick” since the campaign is for Rick to be the Apocalyptic-era leader. In order to make it look more professional and appealing, I felt it was a good idea to decorate the new page. I did this by importing a new theme titled “cuttlefish” from the WordPress website. I also included an “official poll” to gauge who people would vote for and I am in the process of including a bio.

I also decided to create a promotional poster for Rick. I took the main image of Rick from the AMC-TV website.  I then imported the image into GIMP, used the scissor tool  to cut out the main image and pasted it into a new document. Then I moved it so that it was slightly off center. From there I simply used the Text Tool to write in the words and change the font color/size.

After that  was finished, I made a mud-slinging video directed towards his opponent, Shane Walsh. This was done by downloading various clips from youtube that had segments of Shane Walsh behaving poorly. For the most part, this was not too hard due to his type of character. I was able to put together the slides along with text pages for dramatic affect as well as voice the point of the video.  I try to experiment with transitions to make things interesting. I also uploaded a background music clip from youtube and imported it. During certain parts of the movie, I decreased the volume gradually during important speaking moments. I also used the same process to create the promotional video for Rick.

Draw it.

I was able to come up with one more assignment idea, Draw it! This one asks the students to take a picture, whether it be there or one from the internet, and get some experience with Photoshop by converting it into an image that look drawn.

I actually got the idea for this one from a previosu assignment that I did –  Da vinchi Invents the Kitchen Sink. When I worked on that assignment, it required me to figure out how to convert my chosen images into a format that looked hand drawn, which took me a little bit to understand how to do. That being the case, I decided to provide a simple tutorial on how to do this.

Tutorial for Photoshop:

1. Import the file you want to work with. (File > Open)

2. Now we want to make the image black and white. (Image > Image > Adjustments > Desaturate)

3. Create a duplicate layer ( Layer > Duplicate Layer)

4. Invert colors. (Image > Adjustments > Invert)

5.  Change the blending mode to Color Dodge. The layers pallet should be in the bottom right and will have a drop down menu (mine is originally on “Normal”)

6. At this point, the majority of the image will be white with a few black spots (maybe). Dont worry. Go to Filter > Gaussian Blur. From here you can just slide the Pixels bar to make it lighter or darker based on your personal preference.

My example:

Lion

After:

Photoshop converted drawing of a Lion

Humanizer

Being a fan of the internet and animals, there have been a ton of instances where I had seen videos and pictures of animals acting in odd ways. One of these ways is by acting in a way similiar to how a human would. However, I never seem to see it myself in real life…so why not photoshop one?

The Humanizer Assignment asks people to take a picture of an animal and then somehow Photoshop it into a situation that looks like its trying to be human.

Animated Music Video

I have been into AMV’s for awhile now. The only reasoning I can give to it is that I like how a well constructed AMV flows almost perfectly with the theme and pace of the chosen music. This is where the idea for the Animated Music Video assignment came from, as I definitely think it is creative and takes effort.

With that said, I asked my fellow Ds106′ers to make one by taking clips from their favorite anime, cartoon, game, etc. and add music to it to convey a specific theme.

Collabo Assignment

I had made this assignment awhile back while were still in the Audio phase of the class. However, I forgot to write up a blog post about it and only included a mention of it in my week summary. This being the case, I decided it would probably be a good idea to backtrack a little bit and talk about it briefly.

Simply speaking, the purpose of the assignment is to make a song. The catch is that you need to take clips from previous existing songs, find different background music and make it all fit together cohesively.

I got the motivation for this assignment from this site, even though what I was able to come up with wasn’t as nearly good.

My project is starting to come together.

Now that I actually have the sub domain set up and themed appropriately, I am starting to feel that my project is coming together quite nicely. I was able to set up my new site , add a poll and upload my poster, which I may go back and edit given time. I decided that, in order to get participants, I would both tweet and put my poll on Facebook. Doing this, I have been able to get participants about 1 a minute as of right now. I think that was a good idea.

Final Project Discussion

I spoke with Tiffany Hobbs about my project, and her project about Kinetic Typography. For her project I recommended that she settle on a direction on her general theme. I spoke to her about how difficult it would be to add in the theme and she said it wouldnt be that bad, so my suggestion was to make a generic themed one at the moment so she has some progress made, then go back edit it to see how it would look various ways.

She recommended that I make a video against Ricks competitor as well so there would be a poster and video for  both sides.

Week 12 Recap

This weeks assignments were pretty fun to do, although some combinations became challenging to figure out. Despite that, I was able to get all the stars finished ( as well as a few extra) and finish half of my project.

Assignments:

1. Uncle Bob Meets Dorothy for the Postcard/Uncle Bob assignment.  (4 stars)

2. Emo Fish for the Common object/Emo assignment. (4 stars)

3. Find the Changes for the Rebrand Em’/Subtle Switcharoo assignment (6 stars)

4. Good ol’ Country Memory for the Record a Memory/Country assignment (4 stars)

Final Project Posts

1. Finished my Rick Grimes Election Poster

2. Finished my first version of the Shane Walsh Mud-slinging video.
